The Gateway to University Honors course is an extremely beneficial introductory class that educates the students in the University Honors Program about the expectations, resources, and opportunities that are associated with the program. With multiple upper classmen peer leaders, I have gained a more realistic perspective of the program, and a preview of what amazing things I can accomplish through this program in the years to come. This class has made me feel comfortable with the expectations of the program, and increased my confidence in being able to meet and exceed the expectations. One lesson that has stuck with me from this course is that it is more beneficial to focus on and utilize my strengths rather than try to “fix” my weaknesses to become more “well-rounded”. This lesson particularly sparked my interest because it somewhat goes against what I have been taught all my life—to be a well-rounded individual with few weaknesses—but makes absolute sense to me. I would much rather develop my strengths in order to become even stronger in those areas and be able to contribute greater to society, than to be average in most aspects of my life. By discovering my strengths through this course and focusing on them in order to improve them, I feel like I will be able to accomplish more throughout my time at the University of Cincinnati and during my post-graduate life as well.
