The Bees by Laline Paull
Slides From Our Presentation and a Reflection on The Class' Findings
Reflection
For my reflection I chose to create an infographic that provided pollinator options that are local to the Ohio area. One common theme that stuck out to me while reading the book I chose, as well as while listening to the other groups' presentations, was the entanglement of the problems that the bees face -- culminating into one "Wicked Problem". Some of the contributors to this Wicked Problem discussed in our presentations included pesticides, mites, miticide resistance, monocultures, and colony collapse disorder. When thinking of a solution to the problem that the bees face, these many variables become overwhelming; the problem is seemingly indeterminant -- there are too many confounding variables. This becomes overwhelming for someone who has a desire to help the bees. If we can't solve the problem then how can we help?
Something shared in a presentation really stuck with me. It was that no one individual is tasked with solving the problem that the bees face. Rather, if many people each do a small part, there is a cumulative effect that can be powerful. I thought this was a hopeful perspective. To encourage this mindset, I created an infographic with various pollinators local to the Ohio area. My goal with creating this infographic is to provide information about one of the small ways people can contribute to the bee solution: planting pollinators. By increasing awareness and providing people with an accessible option to help, people are more likely to approach the problem instead of being intimidated by its Wickedness.
